Types of Teeth Whitening
Different types of teeth whitening systems offer various benefits. At Good Choice Dental, we offer two methods of teeth whitening procedures for our patients. We use Pola Whitening systems for both in-chair and at-home whitening treatments.
In-Chair Whitening
Is teeth whitening safe? In-chair teeth whitening is the most effective and safe method for achieving a whiter, brighter smile in a short time.
Before we go ahead with the procedure, we conduct an initial examination of your teeth to determine the severity and extent of the discolouration as well as to ensure you are a good candidate for the treatment. Restorative treatments like fillings and gum disease will need to be corrected before undergoing teeth whitening treatment.
We then apply a barrier to protect your gums from exposure to the bleaching agent, and a thin layer of bleaching gel directly to your teeth.
We shine a special light onto your teeth for eight minutes to activate the whitening ingredients in the gel. Once the procedure is complete, the gel is removed, and your mouth is rinsed. The treatment may be repeated up to four times to achieve your desired shade, which may be up to eight shades whiter.
Professional At-Home Whitening Kits
For minor staining, or to keep your teeth white between visits, we have at-home teeth whitening kits that offer professional results from the comfort of your home. PolaDay and PolaNight teeth whitening use a high-viscosity bleaching gel that is injected into a mouth tray customised to fit your mouth.
The specially shaped tray helps to minimise the gums’ exposure to the bleach, and the blend of natural soothers and conditioners reduce irritation.
PolaDay comes in hydrogen peroxide formulas of 3%, 6%, 7.5%, and 9.5% and can be worn up to 30 minutes per day.
PolaDayCP uses 35% carbamide peroxide and can whiten your teeth in just 15 minutes per day.
PolaNight comes in carbamide peroxide formulas of 10%, 16%, 18%, and 22%.
These are worn while you sleep, or 6-8 hours. You can achieve your optimal results in as little as 5-10 days.
How Safe Is Teeth Whitening?
While professional teeth whitening is effective, some patients naturally wonder: Is teeth whitening safe? There are several reasons why professional teeth whitening treatments are safer than over-the-counter products.
Extensively Studied
The area of teeth whitening has been extensively researched by the scientific dental community. Their primary focus is on the safety and applications of bleaching agents for stain removal.
Studies have found that the safety of tooth bleaching products depends on the length of time the tooth is exposed to the active ingredients. The less time the tooth is exposed, the lower the risk of damage to the tooth enamel.
In-chair whitening treatments use a higher concentration of bleaching gel which significantly reduces the time needed for the treatment to take effect.
Heavily Regulated
The use of bleaching agents for teeth whitening is heavily regulated by both the Dental Board of Australia and the Therapeutic Goods Administration. This is to ensure that the correct concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and other bleaching agents are used.
They also ensure that professional-grade teeth whitening gels are administered only by dental professionals who are trained and qualified.
Monitored by Dental Professionals
The bleaching agents used in professional-grade whitening treatments have a higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide than store-bought whitening kits which makes them more effective.
In-chair and professional at-home whitening kits from Good Choice Dental are a safer option than over-the-counter kits as the procedure is carefully monitored by trained dental professionals. Over-the-counter kits can wear down enamel over time, damage nerves, and cause gum infections.
Specially Formulated Bleaching Agents
Professional-grade teeth whitening gels are formulated not only to remove surface stains from your teeth effectively, but also intrinsic stains caused by enamel erosion. At Good Choice Dental, our Pola Teeth Whitening system uses gel that offers remineralising technology to repair and restore your tooth enamel. This improves the appearance of your smile and reduces tooth sensitivity.
Pola whitening gel is also pH neutral to maintain the delicate pH balance in your mouth and protect your teeth and soft tissue from irritation and damage.
Teeth Whitening Treatment After Care
The results from your teeth whitening treatment are not permanent. To prolong the whitening effects of your treatment, there are a few things you can do to keep your smile looking white.
Avoid dark food and beverages such as red wine, coffee, and chocolate. If you are a smoker or chew tobacco, consider quitting to avoid nicotine stains. Brush and floss twice per day with a soft-bristled toothbrush, and rinse with mouthwash once per day. Finally, make regular visits to your dentist for check-ups.
